Lake County MI-VINE Coverage
MI-VINE is Michigan’s free and confidential custody and criminal-case notification service. The public web interface is VINELink, and telephone service is available at (800) 770-7657. Michigan materials describe release, transfer, escape, court hearing, case-status, and disposition events. The exact events depend on the reporting record and agency.
County-jail coverage is based on participating agencies. The reviewed Michigan material does not guarantee Lake County Jail participation in every live search. Check the current Michigan search or use the toll-free line before assuming a booking is covered. MDOC also uses VINE for general state custody notice, but federal Bureau of Prisons and ICE records require their own systems.
A VINELink result is tied to the reporting agency’s record. If Lake County Jail reports a release, that means its custody changed. The person might have gone to the community, MDOC, another jail, or ICE. Search the receiving system when the event or other facts suggest a transfer.

Search a Lake County Inmate
Search one person at a time. Begin with a full legal name and any identifier available from the booking or case record. Names repeat, and an alias or spelling difference can hide the correct match. The reporting agency, date of birth when shown, booking information, and other visible details should align before a notice is saved.
- Open VINELink and select Michigan as the service area.
- Choose the offender or custody search rather than a broad web search.
- Enter the person’s name and any offered identifier. Use enough detail to narrow the results without guessing.
- Open the exact matching booking or custody record. Check the reporting agency and status.
- Record the status wording and event date. Register only on the correct record.
- Confirm a reported release or transfer with Lake County Jail, MDOC, or the receiving agency.
If no match appears, call MI-VINE or the last known custodian. A no-result screen may mean the agency or booking is not participating, the data has not arrived, the spelling differs, or the record is outside the live system. It cannot prove release. Note: Use the same booking record for search and registration so an alert is not attached to another person with a similar name.
Lake County VINELink Release Fields
VINELink’s live labels can vary by agency and record. Michigan public material does not define one required “Out of Custody” phrase or a fixed retention period. Preserve the wording shown rather than translating it into a broader claim. A release or custody-change result reports an event in the participating agency’s file, not freedom from all custody systems.

A released result should be checked against the Lake County Jail record when an exact physical release time is needed. For an MDOC prisoner, OTIS distinguishes “Date Paroled” from later discharge. For North Lake Processing Center, use ICE’s locator and facility because MI-VINE does not replace the immigration custody system.
Read the agency first: A Lake County custody event applies to the named reporting record and may be followed by transfer into another system.
Register Lake County Release Alerts
Registration works best before the expected event. Open the correct custody record, select the event types offered, and choose a contact method. Michigan materials identify phone, text, mobile app, email, and TTY options. The available choices may differ for a Lake County booking and an MDOC record.
- Choose registration on the verified custody record.
- Select release, transfer, escape, or another offered event needed for the inquiry.
- Choose phone, text, mobile app, email, or TTY as available.
- For telephone registration, create a four-digit PIN and retain it securely.
- When the call arrives, listen and enter the PIN followed by the pound sign. This confirms receipt for that event.
- For email or text, expect one notice for the event without the telephone PIN step.
Unconfirmed automated calls may repeat until acknowledged or for up to 24 hours. Optional account creation uses a username and password plus phone or email verification. An account can hold a saved watch list, but it does not broaden the agencies or events available in Michigan.

Lake County MDOC Notice Layers
Michigan separates general VINELink custody registration from additional direct-victim MDOC parole hearing and decision notice. One VINELink signup may not provide every Parole Board notice. Direct victims who need the added MDOC notice route must register separately with MDOC Crime Victim Services at (877) 886-5401.
The difference is functional. VINELink reports offered custody or case events from participating records. MDOC Crime Victim Services handles the separate parole hearing and decision notice process for eligible registered victims. Registering in one system should never be described as automatic enrollment in the other.
Keep each confirmation number, record identifier, and contact method current. If a phone number or email changes, update the registration through the responsible service. Note: General custody alerts and direct-victim parole notices are separate Michigan channels with different events and registration records.
Lake County Custody Systems Differ
The last known custodian determines the next check. For Lake County Jail, call (231) 745-6201 and ask if the person is physically held or was transferred. A historical release timestamp comes from the sheriff’s booking or release record. MI-VINE can add an event alert when that booking participates, but it does not replace the durable county record.
For an MDOC prisoner or supervised person, search OTIS. A “Parolee” status supports prison release into supervision. “Discharged” supports the end of the MDOC jurisdiction shown, which may occur later. VINELink can report general custody events, while OTIS supplies the detailed state corrections profile.
A federal sentenced person belongs in the BOP Inmate Locator. An ICE detainee at North Lake belongs in ICE’s Online Detainee Locator System and the facility channel. A federal or immigration no-match requires agency follow-up. VINELink should not be used to fill that gap.

Confirm Lake County VINELink Results
VINELink is a notice and status service, not a permanent release archive. Data can lag, a participating agency can update after an event, and a booking can move into another system. Official Michigan material warns users not to rely on VINE alone. Save the message, event time, reporting agency, and record identifier, then confirm with the office that held the person.
For a same-day Lake County event, ask the jail whether the person is still physically held and whether the record shows a transfer. Search OTIS if an MDOC move is possible. Search ICE when an immigration detainer or North Lake transfer is possible. A court order can explain the legal reason for release, but it does not prove when jail processing ended.
VINELink limits: It does not cover BOP custody, cannot rule out another hold, and may not preserve a past Lake County event indefinitely.
For historical proof, request the Lake County booking and release sheet. Ask for the release date and time, disposition code, and receiving agency if the event was a transfer. That record is stronger than a vanished live result. MI-VINE remains most useful before an event, when a timely notice is needed.
Save enough context to make later confirmation possible. Record the person’s name as shown, the booking or other visible identifier, the reporting agency, the event type, and the time the message was received. Do not add facts that were not present. If the notice says transfer, ask where custody went next. If it says release, ask whether that term reflects community release or only the end of the reporting agency’s hold.
A court case can explain why the change was authorized, such as bond, dismissal, or sentence action. It still does not supply the jail’s physical release timestamp. Likewise, an OTIS parole field can explain state supervision without proving what happened in a separate Lake County booking. Use the alert as the prompt for the right follow-up, then preserve the official custody or court record that answers the exact question.
